Out in the Community – Our Gigs

The Forget Me Not Community Choir doesn’t just meet each week — we also head out into the community to share the joy of singing.

We call these outings our gigs. They’re relaxed, inclusive performances where our members sing familiar songs and connect with people of all ages, helping to challenge stigma and show what’s possible when people living with dementia are supported to take part fully in community life.

Where We Sing

Our gigs take place across Argyll and Bute and have included:

  • Community events and local celebrations
  • Partnerships with schools
  • Churches
  • Care homes

Every gig is different, but the heart of them is the same — shared music, shared moments, and shared joy.

Upcoming Events

We regularly receive invitations to sing at community events throughout the year.

Upcoming events are posted on our Facebook Page

Why Gigs Matter

For our members, gigs are about far more than performing. They offer moments of pride, confidence, and connection — opportunities to be seen, heard, and celebrated as part of the wider community. For audiences, our gigs are often uplifting and moving, helping to challenge assumptions about dementia and showing the power of music to bring people together.

What to Expect

Our gigs are friendly and informal. There’s no pressure, no perfection, and no expectation that everything goes exactly to plan — and that’s part of what makes them special.

Audiences are encouraged to sing along, dance, clap and enjoy the moment. It’s about shared experience, not polished performance.

Maureen, a retired home economics teacher, has been a dedicated member of the choir for several years. Her involvement has brought happiness not only to herself but also to her loved one, who benefits from a few hours of respite each week while Maureen attends choir sessions.  Maureen expresses her deep appreciation for singing in the choir, highlighting the joy it brings her personally.  She finds great pleasure in seeing the smiles on the faces of others, especially when the choir entertain audiences during their gigs. The social aspect of the choir is also important to Maureen; reconnecting with old friends and forming new friendships has done wonders for her confidence. She values the welcoming environment, where laughter abounds and there is no judgment—only camaraderie and support.
