Our Story and Purpose

Our Why

Every three minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed
with dementia—a progressive and intricate condition that can profoundly impact the entire family. All too frequently, individuals and their loved ones are left to navigate the relentless and evolving challenges on their own.

As the number of individuals living with dementia continues to rise, and families express their challenges in finding essential support, the important work of organisations dedicated to assisting those with dementia has become more crucial than ever.

Music can have immense benefits for people suffering from dementia. It helps reduce anxiety, depression, maintains speech and language, enhances quality of life, and can have a positive impact on those who care for those who suffer from it.

Background

In 2019, Louise Curtis set up a choir in the town of Lochgilphead, Argyll. Her father, Don, visited the choir and thoroughly enjoyed watching the impact music had on people and the happiness and confidence it gave them, and being a part of a group.

Music was a massive part of Don, Louise’s, and her sister, Sharon’s lives while growing up, so, when their father was diagnosed with vascular dementia, music was their bond with their dad. He lost the ability to communicate verbally, and smiled when his favorite song “Long Cool Woman in a black dress” or band was played on the “wireless”.

Don sadly passed away in 2022 but with the passion Louise has to help people, the choir will keep on moving forward in memory of their father.

The Choir

The Choir offers a safe, enriched environment, where members can relax and enjoy an afternoon of singing, laughter, sparking up old friendships and making new ones. The choir makes a difference in the lives of its members, their family and carers and the valuable volunteers who help keep everything running smoothly.

To be part of this choir is a great privilege and honour, and a big thank you to our communities, who are all
very supportive.  The choir performs throughout Argyll,
from small gatherings to large events, at all our “GIGS” we hope to play a significant role in achieving and promoting music as a therapeutic benefit, and at the same
time raising awareness about dementia and its effects it can have on mental health and well-being for those diagnosed and also loved one and carers.

Derek’s passion for the choir is truly infectious, inspiring fellow members to engage wholeheartedly
in every session. His unwavering commitment, together with that of his wife, has played a pivotal
role in nurturing a warm and inclusive environment where all members feel welcome and supported.
This sense of belonging is evident and shared among the group. Derek often expresses a desire for daily choir sessions, which speaks volumes about the enjoyment and fulfilment both he and his wife
experience through their participation. Their regular presence not only enhances their own wellbeing but also contributes greatly to the vibrant community spirit that characterises the choir.
